Nappy Workshops

If you have a few friends who would have fun creating something, how about having a workshop.  These workshops are run in your home or another venue that you organise.  I bring all the materials, so all you need to supply is somewhere for us to sit and tea/coffee.

Although you have the initial cost of the workshop, think how much money you will be able to save by making all of your own nappies!!  They are great for gifts for friends and family having babies too.  And it is so satisfying seeing your baby wearing beautiful nappies that you have made.

Workshops are currently available in the NorthShore, Northern District, Hills District and surrounding areas of Sydney.  At various times they may also be available in other areas of NSW, particularly on the North or SouthCoast, so make sure you enquire if you are from those areas!  Enquiries are welcome from other areas too (if I can’t do the workshop I may know someone who can!).

Introduction to modern cloth nappies

This workshop is great for a mothers’/parents’ group or a prenatal class.  When you first start to look into modern cloth nappies, it can be very confusing as there are so many choices.  This is a good way to get to see and feel the range of nappies available.  In the workshop I will cover

Ù     Fabrics and their properties

Ù     Types of nappies

Ù     Using cloth nappies

Ù     Washing

And I will answer any questions you may have.  I will bring along lots of different example nappies for you to see and feel.

COST:  This workshop is usually FREE with some conditions.  Just ask!

Sewing pocket nappies

Pocket nappies are easy to sew and to use.  You don’t have to be a good sewer to make these.  Gather a few friends and we’ll have fun sewing together, and you’ll end up with the start of your homemade pocket nappy stash.  It is very satisfying to make your own beautiful nappies.  I will bring all materials.

TIME:  About 2 to 3 hours, depending on individual sewing skills!

COST:  3 people @ $25 each, 4 to 6 people @ $20 each or over 6 people at $15 each

Materials cost extra on top of this.  Cost depends on fabrics chosen by each individual, but will usually be around $10 to 15 per nappy including inserts.  At the workshop or afterwards you will be able to buy materials to sew extra nappies at home.

Sewing fitted nappies

Fitted nappies are also easy to sew, and are often preferred for their versatility – you can use them with various covers, liners and boosters.  You don’t have to be a good sewer to make these.  Gather a few friends and we’ll have fun sewing together, and you’ll end up with the start of your homemade fitted nappy stash.  It is very satisfying to make your own beautiful nappies.  I will bring all materials.

TIME:  About 3 to 4 hours, depending on individual sewing skills!

COST:  3 people @ $30 each, 4 to 6 people @ $25 each or over 6 people at $18 each

Materials cost extra on top of this.  Cost depends on fabrics chosen by each individual, but will usually be around $10 to 15 per nappy.  At the workshop or afterwards you will be able to buy materials to sew extra nappies at home.

Knitting a soaker

You do not need to be an expert knitter for this workshop.  Let me know your current knitting skill so we can work out the workshop length though!  This workshop is for beginner knitters.  You will learn how to do a knit stitch, a purl stitch, and everything you need to knit your own soaker.  It is run over two sessions so that you can knit the main part of the soaker between the sessions and have help with the legs and finishing it off.

TIME:  About 2 to 3 hours, depending on individual knitting skills!

COST:  Usually, 3 people @ $30 each, 4 to 6 people @ $26 each or over 6 people at $25 each - if all knitters are complete beginners the time needed and therefore cost might change.  This will be discussed when you enquire.

Materials cost extra on top of this or you can ask for a list so you can purchase your own materials (this could be cheaper if you know someone who has needles or wool, or if you’d like to purchase your own wool).  Cost is about $35 for two metal circular needles and 3 balls of organic merino wool.  I can supply you with wool before the workshop if you’d like to hand dye it.

If participants each knit a square to donate to a charity blanket, the cost of this workshop will be reduced!!!

After this workshop you will be able to knit all of your own soakers and you should have the skills for basic jumpers, etc.

Sewing a fleece or PUL cover

If you use fitted or flat nappies, good covers are essential, and fleece or PUL covers are great for day or night use.  You will have options of various styles (pull up, touch tape or front/side snap) and fabrics (various colours and types of PUL or fleece).

TIME:  About 2 to 3 hours, depending on individual sewing skills!

COST:  3 people @ $25 each, 4 to 6 people @ $22 each or over 6 people at $18 each

Materials cost extra on top of this.  Cost depends on fabrics chosen by each individual, but will usually be around $10 per cover.

Charity sewing

If you are in a craft group or similar and you'd like to sew nappies or knit soakers for charity, I'm happy to help out with some instruction, discounted materials, etc.  I can either discount the cost of the workshop or sometimes run it at no cost.  Please let me know about your group and the cause you are sewing for.
